Each year GUFC presents an important award for the Giant of the Year which acknowledges extraordinary services by a volunteer committee member.
As with most local sports clubs, GUFC is run entirely by volunteers – committee, coaches, managers and many other helpers. With nearly 1600 players and 138 teams, running GUFC is a big job. It starts in January with registration, grading and teams commencing training – and ends in November/December with the annual general meeting and planning for the next season. It simply can’t be understated – our volunteers ensure we all get to play football. Without them, we wouldn’t have a club. Every effort is appreciated – we thank you all.
Congratulations Michael New our extremely hard working and dedicated Treasurer, who received the 2021 Giant of the Year Award.
Below is an excerpt of the speech made by GUFC President Anthony Severino when presenting the award:
I would like to congratulate Michael New on receiving The Giant Of The Year Award!
Michael has been Treasurer of our club since 2016 and in that time he has contributed in many ways, other than just being the treasurer. Michael has overseen the Strategic Planning of the club, met with Council to finalise the last development stage of building works to the GUFC clubhouse, overseen our grants programs and amongst other tasks has spent many countless hours over the his years on the committee.
On top of his Treasurer duties he has gone above and beyond making sure our club was Covid Compliant, and also spent the past 6 months sitting on the Premier League sub committee, doing his bit to make sure GUFC had representation in both the Men and Womens Premier League Competetion in 2022.
I’M SURE YOU WILL ALL AGREE THAT Michael is a worthy recipient of GIANT OF THE YEAR for 2021.
Thank you Michael for all that you do for the club and fellow committee members.
