It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Gymea United Football Club stalwart (icon) Mrs. Eileen Ward. Mrs Ward passed away on Sunday 21st December, 2025
She was in many ways the very essence and soul of GUFC. Her unwavering passion and commitment to the Club and all its members remains unmatched, serving as Registrar, Canteen Supervisor and notably Club Secretary for 19 years from 1991-2009. Her detailed knowledge of all aspects of the functioning of the Club and its needs, and of its history was extraordinary.
As well as her duties as Secretary, she was actively involved in all elements of the day-to-day activities. She made herself available most weekends to be on hand at the oval to answer any queries that might arise.
She was very much the ‘go to’ person in the Club and GUFC greatly depended on her throughout those years. When she retired from her duties at the Club, a number of people were needed to cover all facets of her activities.
The level of respect Club members, and those throughout the SSFA, had for her was clearly manifested by the fact that she was addressed as ‘Mrs Ward’ by most. Her duties as Secretary also included liaising with the Association, and her rapport with all involved was second to none. Everyone associated with Football in the Shire knew the unassuming ‘little English lady’ that guided Gymea through each season.
Mrs. Ward was a universally liked life member who served the Club for many years, always with her trademark consistent friendliness to the multiple generations of Gymea football players.
The growth and success of the GUFC, now 135 teams, in no small measure, reflects the great influence Mrs. Ward has had on the Club.
This influence and impact were fittingly recognised when the ‘Ellis Ward Ladies Pavillion’ at Gymea was opened in 2015 and was named after her and Ruby Ellis.
She was awarded a SSFA merit award in 1998 and a FNSW State Award in 2005
She will be greatly missed by all in the football community.
