GUFC History - 1990

GUFC History - 1990

"International Soccer at Gymea"
International soccer returned to Gymea Oval on Friday 27th July 1990 when the touring U.S.A. Eagles Under 14 team was taken on by a combined Under 14 Gymea team.
The match played on a heavy ground after torrential rain stopped one hour before the match was due to start and the despair of the two teams of boys was lifted after a fear that the match would be washed out.
With the score at 3 all five minutes before time it seemed a fair result but Gymea had other ideas and scored the winning goal only moments before the final whistle.
After the match the Club in conjunction with the Under 14 parents put on a barbeque for all who attended before the visitors were billeted out for the night.
Apparently Gymea was the only Club to offer billets to the visitors who came from Hollywood area in California and made a three week tour of Australian Eastern States.
Wanda Surf Life Saving Club organised to open their doors to the boys from both teams on the Saturday and put on a display of their Inflatable Rubber Boats and how they are used in surf rescues.
We trust the Eagles will remember their visit to Gymea and the Sutherland Shire!
