2011 wrap up from the President
Dave Johnson, President GUFC...
The season started on the 27th March and where has the last six months gone?!? The season went so fast, helped along by all the rain and many weekends being washed out.
I hope you all enjoyed your season playing with SSFA's largest club. GUFC had 1450 players this season, ranging from under six to over 45's.
Our finals result were pleasing in 2011. We had 25 teams in the semi finals, with eleven making grand finals.
Five teams won their grand finals, four of whilch were junior womens teams.
What was great this year was the performance of the young boys teams - with the 10A, 11A, 12A and 13A all finishing in the top four.
No senior teams reached grand finals this year which was disappointing. Maybe next year we have got to be more realistic on which grades our teams are put in.
Trying to solve the issue of grounds condition and access continues to be a priority for GUFC. The overall state of the grounds in the Shire wasn't great, with lots of the ovals left with little grass on them by early May.
GUFC suffered with Kareela 2 being closed for training and matches on numerous occasions.
Being in the centre of the shire, there are not many alternatives for GUFC in terms of accessing other grounds. We are hoping that we get a school ground for overflow games next season.
I would like to thank the committee, coaches, managers and other volunteers for their great support during the season. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make this club run smoothly.
We still need a lot more volunteers for the committee and for various programs which we have in the pipeline.
We were hoping to extend the viewing area and enlarge the community hall in the future. However this work has been put on hold while we work with Council to put a suitable lease in place.
The junior presentation held last weekend was a great success. Thanks to Anthony Severino and his teams who did us proud. There were jumping castles, pony rides and the animal farm, face painting and a great fireworks show. The evening finshed with an exhibition game between the 11D and the Dale King all stars.
I hope you all have a great summer break and we look forward to seeing you all back for soccer at GUFC in 2012.
